At Opus Energy we prefer a simple and clear approach to clean energy purchasing: we endeavour to secure as much of our power as possible from cleaner electricity sources – for all our customers.
We don’t want to confuse our customers with having to choose from complicated tariffs so every Opus Energy customer receives an electricity supply where over the last two years (between April 2009 and March 2011), 70% of the energy supplied by Opus Energy to our customers came from cleaner, low-carbon sources – 37% from renewable generators and 33% from cleaner Combined Heat and Power (CHP) produced by CHP generators. We are also transparent about our cleaner energy supply, where it comes from and how it is generated.
By purchasing electricity from cleaner sources Opus Energy is supporting the use of natural, sustainable fuels without the long-term environmental damage or danger of depleting limited reserves of fossil fuels.
Our cleaner energy supply uses water, wind and biomass to generate our renewable electricity cleanly. Using wind and hydro power to create electricity does so without producing harmful pollutants or damaging gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
Biomass is the use of plant matter or animal waste to produce electricity. It can be a combination of waste materials such as straw and manure which are recycled to generate electricity alternatively biomass can be made from ‘energy crops’. An energy crop, such as willow, is carbon neutral as it absorbs carbon from the atmosphere as they grow but releases it back into the atmosphere when they are burned. Using biomass fuels instead of fossil fuels reduces the amount of stored carbon that is released helping to fight climate change.
